A popular Mardi Gras tradition, begun in the 1870s, the King Cake is baked in honor of the three kings bearing gifts for baby Jesus. The cake is dressed with the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green, gold and is oval-shaped – representing unity of religions. A small toy baby is hidden inside each cake.
